Help Lauren Raise Money for Friends of Iowa Midwives!

Help me raise money to benefit Friends Of Iowa Midwives and license Certified Professional Midwives in the state of Iowa!

DUE OCTOBER 9TH!

I want to raise $500 for Friends of Iowa Midwives. This will fund a full week of lobbying effort at the capitol during the 2011 session.

Why?

Both of my daughters were born at home with a midwife. Homebirth is a safe birthing option that many Iowa families are already using and looking for, yet our midwives are not recognized by the state. Licensing midwives benefits families who seek access to quality maternity care as well as guaranteeing a standard of education and experience for the midwives who attend their births. And licensing midwives protects our trained care providers from being prosecuted unfairly.

My History with Friends of Iowa Midwives
I started a homebirth support group in my town before I was even pregnant because there was local interest. All I really did was activate a defunct group and bring some snacks! From that first get-together at the public library it was clear that there were many people interested in working to license midwives in our state. Soon we had a local chapter and a bill draft. Before I knew it, a humble meetup for families spawned several regional chapters, visits from nationally recognized experts in midwifery maternal care, and media coverage galore. Our bill has been up 2 times and last year it came close to passing. This year, our 3rd, will be the charm. We have a statewide, bipartisan, grassroots support. We have an amazing sponsor and dozens of awesome cosponsors. We have a member of our group who is ready and willing to work at the capitol every day if we can compensate her fairly. All we need is the cash to make this happen. That's where you come in.
